What are the four ECCC alert levels?
Every alert on weather.gc.ca and the WeatherCAN app fits one of four categories. They are ordered by how confident forecasters are that dangerous weather will arrive, and by how much lead time you have to prepare.

What is a special weather statement?
A special weather statement (SWS) is the gentlest alert ECCC issues. It exists for situations that do not meet warning or advisory criteria but still deserve a mention — an approaching system whose track is uncertain, a first snowfall of the season, or a stretch of unseasonable temperatures. Think of it as the forecaster tapping you on the shoulder. There is no numerical threshold for an SWS; it is a judgement call, and it often precedes a firmer alert once the picture sharpens.
How is a weather advisory different from a warning?
The gap between an advisory and a warning is one of severity, not just timing. Advisories cover weather that is disruptive but generally survivable with common sense: fog advisories, blowing-snow advisories, frost advisories, and heat and freezing-drizzle advisories among them. Warnings are reserved for weather that threatens life, safety, or significant property damage. Why do warning thresholds change by region?
Canada spans six time zones and every climate from Pacific rainforest to High Arctic tundra, so a single national trigger would be meaningless. A snowfall warning is issued at 15 cm within 12 hours across much of the country, but in parts of the North the bar sits higher, and in areas unused to snow it can sit lower. A watch is the "get ready" stage. ECCC issues watches — most often for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, winter storms, and rainfall — when the atmosphere is primed for a hazardous event but forecasters cannot yet pin down exactly where or when it will strike. As a system approaches and confidence rises, a watch is typically upgraded to a warning for the specific areas in the firing line. A watch can also simply expire if the threat fails to materialise. The transition from watch to warning is the single most important signal to watch for: it means the hazard has moved from possible to expected.
How do model disagreements shape these alerts?
Behind every ECCC alert sits an ensemble of forecast models — Canada's own GEM (the GDPS global and RDPS regional systems), the European ECMWF, the American NOAA GFS, and the German DWD ICON.
