A moderate El Nino is already underway and forecasters give it a strong chance of reaching Super El Nino strength by early 2027. Here is the honest picture, and why it makes seasonal outlooks harder to call.

El Nino and La Nina are the two swings of a natural climate pattern called the El Nino Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. It is driven by the temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean and the winds above it, and it nudges weather across the whole planet. Because it shifts the odds of a wet or dry, mild or cold season months ahead, ENSO is one of the few things that gives seasonal forecasts any skill at all. That is exactly why it is worth understanding, and why we track it here.

What ENSO actually is

In a neutral year the tropical Pacific sits near its long term average. In an El Nino, the central and eastern Pacific runs warmer than normal and the trade winds relax. In a La Nina, the same region runs cooler and the trades strengthen. Scientists measure the state using the Oceanic Nino Index, or ONI, the sea surface temperature anomaly in a stretch of the equatorial Pacific called the Nino 3.4 region. Roughly speaking, an ONI at or above plus 0.5 C signals El Nino, and at or below minus 0.5 C signals La Nina.

What a Super El Nino is

A Super El Nino is not a separate phenomenon. It is simply a very strong El Nino, usually defined as an ONI peaking at or above plus 2.0 C. These are rare. Only a handful have occurred since reliable records began in 1950. The clearest recent examples are 1997 to 1998, which peaked near plus 2.4 C, and 2015 to 2016, which reached about plus 2.6 C and stands as the strongest on record. The 2023 to 2024 event peaked around plus 2.0 C, right at the edge of the category. The bigger the anomaly, the more forcefully the atmosphere tends to respond, though no two events unfold the same way.

The current status in 2026

As of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center discussion issued on 9 July 2026, an El Nino Advisory is in effect. The Nino 3.4 anomaly stood at about plus 1.2 C, which is a moderate El Nino, not yet a super one. The important part is the trajectory: CPC forecasters put a 97 percent chance that El Nino persists into early spring 2027, and roughly an 81 percent chance it strengthens into a very strong event during October to December 2026. The UK Met Office has likewise declared El Nino conditions and called this a potentially very strong event, one of the most intense on record, with central and eastern Pacific anomalies likely to exceed plus 2.0 C.

The honest headline: a Super El Nino has not happened yet in 2026. A strong El Nino is here and is forecast, with high confidence, to have a good chance of reaching super strength by the northern hemisphere winter. Anyone stating it as done is getting ahead of the data.

Why this matters for forecast uncertainty

Here is the hook, and the reason we built this site. A strong ENSO signal loads the dice for a whole season, which is genuinely useful. But loading the dice is not the same as a guarantee. In the tropics the response is fairly reliable. In the mid latitudes, where most of our readers live, the signal has to travel through jet streams and competing patterns, so how it lands is less certain. That is precisely where seasonal and long range models can diverge, one leaning wetter, another milder, another closer to normal. During a big El Nino those disagreements can widen rather than shrink. When you see the models here line up, confidence is warranted. United States

El Nino strengthens the subtropical jet stream, which tends to steer storms across the southern tier of the country. In a typical El Nino winter, the southern United States, from California through the Gulf Coast to the Southeast, leans wetter and stormier, while the northern tier and the Ohio Valley lean drier and milder. Northern winters are often less harsh overall. El Nino also tends to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity through stronger wind shear. United Kingdom

The UK is a long way from the tropical Pacific, so the ENSO signal here is weaker and easily overridden by home grown drivers like the North Atlantic Oscillation. The Met Office notes that El Nino can raise the chance of milder, wetter and windier conditions in autumn and early winter, sometimes followed by colder, calmer late winter spells, but it stresses significant uncertainty and says UK specific impacts will be assessed as forecasts evolve. Australia feels ENSO more directly than almost anywhere. El Nino typically brings drier and warmer conditions, especially across eastern and southern Australia, along with raised bushfire and drought risk and a later, weaker northern wet season. The Bureau of Meteorology's outlook points to below average rainfall for much of the country through winter and spring 2026, with a 60 to 80 percent chance of drier than normal conditions across parts of the east and south, and above average daytime temperatures over most of the continent.
