What actually powers the Met Office app?
The app is a shop window onto the Met Office's forecasting system. As the UK's national meteorological service, the Met Office runs its own global and high-resolution UK-area models — the Unified Model family — on supercomputers, assimilating observations from satellites, weather balloons, aircraft, radar and a dense network of surface stations. Human forecasters then add judgement on top, particularly during severe weather.
That matters because the Met Office's UK-area model is run at a finer grid spacing than most global models, so it can resolve showers, sea breezes and local detail that a coarser global model smooths over. When you want to know whether that band of rain will clear your town by kick-off, a high-resolution home model has a genuine advantage.
How accurate is it for the next few days?
Short-range accuracy is the app's strong suit. For temperature, general conditions and the timing of frontal systems over the next 24 to 48 hours, it is dependable. The Met Office publishes verification figures showing its next-day forecasts are correct the large majority of the time, and independent meteorologists broadly regard its short-range guidance as excellent.
The honest caveats are the ones that apply to every forecast provider. Convective showers — the "sunshine and showers" days — are inherently hard to place: the model may nail the risk of a downpour across the region while getting the exact street wrong. Hill fog, coastal mist and overnight minimum temperatures in sheltered valleys are also classic sources of small errors. None of that means the app is "wrong"; it means the atmosphere is chaotic, and a point forecast is a best estimate.
What about the warnings?
This is where the Met Office app is genuinely hard to beat. It is the official channel for the National Severe Weather Warning Service, using a colour-coded system:

Does it name the storms?
Yes. The Met Office, together with Ireland's Met Éireann and the Dutch KNMI, runs the storm-naming scheme that began in the 2015–16 season. A storm is named when it is judged capable of causing amber or red-level impacts. Named storms make it easier to follow a single system across news, social media and the app, and they are a useful shorthand for "this one is worth paying attention to".
Where does the Met Office app fall short?
Three honest limitations are worth naming. First, like most consumer apps it shows you one answer — a single deterministic forecast — without much sense of how confident that answer is. A calm, high-pressure week and a knife-edge situation where the jet stream could send a low either side of the country look much the same in the app. Second, the further ahead you look, the softer the forecast becomes; anything beyond about five days should be read as a trend, not a promise. Third, rain-radar "nowcasting" in the app is helpful but can lag fast-moving convective cells.
