Is BBC Weather accurate?

BBC Weather is a solid, well-presented forecast — but a common myth is that it comes from the Met Office. Since 2018 it has been powered by a different provider, and knowing that changes how you should read it.

BBC Weather is broadly accurate and perfectly good for everyday planning, but there is one thing most people in the UK get wrong about it: it is no longer a Met Office forecast. Since 2018 the BBC's forecasts have been supplied by DTN (formerly MeteoGroup), a commercial weather company, not the national meteorological service. For general use it is reliable; for official severe weather warnings you should still go to the Met Office.

Who actually provides BBC Weather?

For decades the BBC and the Met Office were synonymous. That changed after the BBC put its weather contract out to tender and, from 2018, moved to MeteoGroup — since rebranded as DTN — as its data provider. DTN blends output from multiple global forecast models, adds its own post-processing and forecaster input, and delivers the polished forecasts you see on the BBC website, app and broadcasts.
