Is the Apple Weather app accurate in the UK?
Apple Weather has come a long way since the shaky Dark Sky days, and for glanceable UK forecasts it is genuinely good — but for warnings and knife-edge days, it is not where you should stop looking.
For everyday UK use, Apple Weather is now reasonably accurate — good enough for deciding whether to grab a coat or move the barbecue indoors. Since Apple rebuilt the app around its own WeatherKit service, it blends multiple data sources and adds slick features like minute-by-minute rain and next-hour precipitation. But it is not a UK-specialist forecast, it is not the official warnings channel, and on genuinely uncertain days it should not be your only reference.
What powers Apple Weather now?
The app's history explains a lot. Apple bought the popular Dark Sky app in 2020, wound it down by 2023, and folded its technology into Apple Weather and the developer service WeatherKit. Rather than relying on a single model, WeatherKit blends multiple weather data sources and models into one forecast, with Apple's own processing layered on top. Apple does not publish a full breakdown of every source it uses, which is part of the wider "black box" problem with consumer weather apps — you see an answer, not the reasoning.
Was Dark Sky the problem in the UK?
Partly, and it is worth knowing the history. Dark Sky's hyperlocal rain predictions were built on and best tuned for the United States, where dense radar coverage supported its famous "rain starting in 10 minutes" alerts. In the UK, reviewers frequently found those minute-by-minute predictions less reliable, sometimes promising rain that never came or missing showers that did. Apple Weather has broadened its data sources since, and UK performance has improved — but the lesson lingers: hyperlocal precision is only as good as the data feeding it.
How accurate is it day to day?
For temperature, general conditions and the shape of the day ahead, Apple Weather is solid over the next 24 to 48 hours. The interface is excellent — clear hourly and ten-day views, air quality, UV and a readable precipitation graph. The next-hour rain feature is handy when it works, and on steady frontal rain it usually does. Where it wobbles is the same place everyone wobbles: scattered convective showers, hill fog and coastal effects, where placing rain to the street is close to impossible for any model.
The bigger limitation is transparency. Apple Weather gives you a confident-looking single forecast with no sense of how sure it is. On a calm anticyclonic week that is fine. On a day when the jet stream could send an Atlantic low either side of the country, the app looks equally confident — and that false certainty is the trap.
Does Apple Weather show UK severe weather warnings?
Apple Weather can surface government-issued severe weather alerts in supported regions, and it has expanded this over recent versions. But it is not the authoritative UK channel. The official National Severe Weather Warning Service — yellow, amber and red warnings — is run by the Met Office, and that is where you should confirm the severity of an approaching storm:
- Yellow — be aware of possible severe weather and localised disruption.
- Amber — be prepared; impacts are likely and plans may need to change.
- Red — take action; dangerous weather with a risk to life is expected.
Named storms, assigned by the Met Office with Met Éireann and KNMI, are another cue to go to the source rather than relying on a general-purpose app.
Should you trust it over the Met Office?
For convenience and glanceability, Apple Weather is excellent — it is on your lock screen and it looks great. For UK-specific accuracy and, above all, for warnings, the Met Office remains the authority, because it runs its own high-resolution UK model and adds expert human judgement. A sensible setup is to use Apple Weather for quick checks and the Met Office for anything that matters.

That convenience is the app's real strength, but it also compresses a complex forecast into a single number and icon, which amplifies the false-certainty problem. A widget showing a sun-behind-cloud symbol tells you nothing about a 40% shower risk or a knife-edge frontal timing. If a decision matters, open the full app and read the hourly precipitation graph rather than trusting the glanceable summary — and if it really matters, cross-check the Met Office.
What about temperature quirks?
One recurring UK gripe with general-purpose apps is the "feels like" versus actual temperature confusion, and overnight minima in particular. On clear, calm nights, sheltered rural spots can fall several degrees below what a smoothed model grid suggests, so a forecast of 3°C can still mean a grass frost in a valley. Apple Weather handles this reasonably, but it is worth knowing that point forecasts represent a small area, not your exact garden. For frost-sensitive plans — gritting, protecting plants, an early drive — treat the number as indicative and lean towards caution.

Apple Weather is accurate enough for everyday UK life and a pleasure to use, especially after moving on from Dark Sky's US-centric roots. Its weaknesses are hyperlocal rain timing, opaque sourcing and a confident interface that hides uncertainty. Keep it for convenience, lean on the Met Office for warnings, and check model agreement before you trust any single app on a big decision.
