How does weather radar actually work?
A weather radar sends out pulses of microwave energy and listens for the echoes bounced back by raindrops, snowflakes and hailstones. The stronger the returned signal, or reflectivity, the more, or larger, the precipitation particles in that patch of sky. How do you tell which way the rain is going?
A single radar frame tells you where rain is; the animation tells you where it is going. Play the loop and watch the direction the blobs travel and how fast. Most UK weather moves broadly west to east, steered by the jet stream, but individual systems can track from the south-west, north-west or, in cold spells, the east. By noting the speed and heading of a band of rain, you can estimate when it will reach you and how long it will last. How should you use radar for short-term planning?
Radar is at its best for "nowcasting," the next zero to a few hours. If you can see a clear band of rain to your west with a gap behind it, you can reasonably time a dog walk or a school run around it. For anything beyond a few hours, extrapolating the current picture becomes unreliable because showers grow, decay and change direction, and new rain can develop where the map is currently clear.
