Why the Met Office says it feels colder — or warmer — than the thermometer reads, and how wind and humidity drive the difference.
The Met Office "feels like" temperature estimates how hot or cold the air feels on exposed skin, rather than what a thermometer reads in the shade. It blends the actual air temperature with the wind (which strips warmth away) and humidity (which changes how well sweat can cool you). On a raw, windy January day it can feel several degrees below the true reading; in a muggy July heatwave it can feel warmer.
Why isn't the thermometer reading enough?
A thermometer measures air temperature in standardised, sheltered conditions. Your body, though, is constantly exchanging heat with its surroundings. Two things dominate that exchange: how fast the air is moving past you, and how much moisture the air already holds. Ignore those and 8°C in a flat calm and 8°C in a 40mph gale look identical on paper — yet anyone waiting at a bus stop knows they are not.
How does the Met Office calculate 'feels like'?
The Met Office uses a method developed by the Joint Action Group for Temperature Indices (JAG/TI), which combines air temperature, wind speed and relative humidity into a single figure. In cold conditions the calculation leans on wind chill; in warm conditions it leans on a heat-index style adjustment for humidity. It is a model of typical human perception, not a second physical measurement — so treat it as a well-grounded guide rather than an exact law.
Importantly, the figure assumes an average adult outdoors, in the shade, walking at a modest pace. Your own experience will vary with what you are wearing, how active you are, your age and how acclimatised you are to the conditions. Two people standing at the same bus stop can honestly disagree about how cold it feels — the "feels like" number is the sensible middle estimate, not a promise about any one body.
Wind chill: why cold plus wind feels brutal
Your skin warms a wafer-thin layer of air right against it. Wind blows that insulating layer away and replaces it with colder air, so your body loses heat faster and your skin feels the lower temperature. The stronger the wind, the greater the effect — which is why an exposed hilltop or a gap between buildings can feel bitter even when the official temperature is only mildly cold. Wind chill matters most below about 10°C.
Humidity: why warm plus muggy feels worse
In the heat your body cools mainly by sweating; as sweat evaporates it carries heat away. When the air is already humid, evaporation slows, cooling becomes less effective, and the same temperature feels hotter and more oppressive. This is why a humid 28°C in a British summer can feel more draining than a dry 30°C abroad. In hot, humid spells the "feels like" figure rises above the air temperature.
There is also a smaller factor the calculation cannot fully capture: direct sunshine. Standing in bright sun can feel several degrees warmer than the shaded air temperature the "feels like" figure is based on, while a cold, cloudy, damp day can feel more penetrating than the number suggests. Think of "feels like" as a solid estimate of the air's effect on you, not a precise account of every microclimate you step into.

Should you plan by 'feels like' or the real temperature?
For anything involving your comfort or safety outdoors — what coat to wear, whether the kids need hats, how hard a run will feel, the risk on an exposed walk — the "feels like" figure is the better guide. For frost, ice and whether surfaces will freeze, use the actual air (and grass) temperature, because water freezes at a real 0°C regardless of how cold it feels to you. Gardeners and drivers, in particular, should watch the true temperature for frost.
The "feels like" reading is also a useful health cue. In a cold snap, a low "feels like" temperature signals a real risk of losing body heat quickly outdoors, which matters for older people, young children and anyone working or exercising in the wind. In summer, a high "feels like" value in humid air is a warning that the body will struggle to cool itself — the point at which the Met Office and the UK Health Security Agency issue heat-health alerts. Dressing and pacing yourself to the "feels like" figure, rather than the raw thermometer, is simply the safer habit.
