What does 'chance of rain' mean on the Met Office forecast?
The percentage is a probability of any measurable rain at your exact spot — not how much, how long, or how much of the map gets wet.
When the Met Office shows a 40% chance of rain at 3pm, it means there is a 40% probability that at least a measurable amount of rain (0.1mm or more) will fall at your specific location during that hour. It is not a measure of how heavy the rain will be, how long it will last, or how much of the map will get wet — only how likely any rain is at all.
How is the percentage actually worked out?
Modern forecasts are not a single prediction. The Met Office runs its computer model many times over, each time nudging the starting conditions by a tiny, plausible amount. This technique is called ensemble forecasting, and the Met Office system behind it is MOGREPS (the Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System).
