Is Windy accurate for New Zealand?
Windy is a display, not a forecaster. Its accuracy over New Zealand depends entirely on which model you choose and how far ahead you look.
Windy is reasonably accurate for New Zealand out to about three or four days, but only because it shows the same global models the professionals use. Windy does not make its own forecast — it visualises ECMWF, GFS and ICON. Pick the right model and read it sensibly and you will do well; trust a single frame ten days out and you will be caught out. For official warnings you should still go to MetService.
What Windy actually is
It helps to be clear about what Windy does. It is a visualisation platform: it takes the raw output of the world's major weather models and turns it into the smooth, animated maps millions of people rely on. The wind streamlines, the rain radar overlays and the temperature shading are genuinely excellent tools. But the underlying numbers come from national forecasting centres, not from Windy itself.
That distinction matters in New Zealand more than almost anywhere. The country sits deep in the mid-latitude westerlies, downstream of thousands of kilometres of open Southern Ocean where there are very few surface observations. Weather systems race in from the west, the Southern Alps wring them out, and conditions can differ enormously between the West Coast and Canterbury just an hour apart. A global model with a grid spacing of 9 to 13 kilometres simply cannot resolve that terrain in fine detail — and Windy can only show what the model contains.
Which model should you choose on Windy?
Windy lets you switch between models, and this is the single most important accuracy decision you make. The main options relevant to New Zealand are:

ECMWF is widely regarded as the most accurate global deterministic model, and on Windy it is usually the paid option. GFS is the American model, it is free and open, and it updates four times a day — but for New Zealand it can be noisier, especially for rainfall timing. ICON gives you a valuable third opinion. When all three agree, confidence is high. When they diverge, that is your signal to be cautious.
Where Windy is genuinely reliable
For broad-scale features — the arrival of a front, a big northerly airstream, the general strength and direction of wind offshore — Windy is very good in the one-to-three-day window. Sailors, kite-surfers, pilots and trampers use it constantly and for good reason. The wind fields it draws from ECMWF and GFS are the same fields that feed marine forecasts around the world.
Windy also shines as a way to see the atmosphere rather than just read a number. Watching the animated streamlines swing from westerly to southerly as a front crosses, or seeing a plume of subtropical moisture aim at the north of the North Island, builds real intuition about what is coming. Where Windy falls short in New Zealand
The weaknesses are predictable once you understand the models feeding it:
- Mountain rainfall. Orographic rain over the Southern Alps and the ranges of the North Island is often under- or mis-placed by a coarse global grid. Windy may show light rain where the West Coast is being drenched.
- Local wind funnelling. Gap winds through Cook Strait, the Canterbury nor'wester and sea breezes are frequently smoothed away.
- Ex-tropical cyclones. When a decaying tropical system tracks towards the north of the North Island, models can disagree sharply on the track. A single Windy frame hides that uncertainty.
- No MetService local model. Windy does not display MetService's high-resolution New Zealand models, which are tuned to local terrain. This is a real gap for detailed on-shore forecasting.
Windy versus MetService
MetService is New Zealand's official forecaster and the only body that issues Severe Weather Watches and Orange and Red Warnings. It runs its own high-resolution models over New Zealand in addition to interpreting the global guidance, and its meteorologists add human judgement that no raw model output on Windy can replace. Windy is a superb planning and visualisation tool; MetService is the authority for decisions about safety. Use Windy to understand the pattern, and MetService to decide whether it is safe to be on the water or in the hills.
