What is an Alberta clipper?

Named after the fast 19th-century clipper ships, an Alberta clipper is a low-pressure system that forms on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta and races southeast across the Prairies and into Ontario and the U.S. Midwest. Because it originates over land, far from any ocean, it carries little moisture — snowfalls are usually light, in the 5 to 15 cm range, and fluffy. The real story with a clipper is what follows it: a surge of frigid Arctic air behind the low that can send temperatures plunging by 15 to 20 °C in a matter of hours, often with sharp winds and blowing snow that cut visibility on the open Prairie.

What is a Colorado low and why does it snow so heavily?

A Colorado low is the heavyweight of Prairie and Ontario winter storms. It develops in the lee of the Rocky Mountains over Colorado and the U.S. High Plains, then tracks northeast toward Manitoba, northern Ontario, and the Great Lakes. Its route matters: as it swings north it taps a stream of warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico and wraps that moisture around its cold northern side, wringing it out as heavy, wet snow. Colorado lows are the classic engine behind blizzard warnings in Winnipeg and major dumps across southern Ontario. They are slower and far wetter than clippers, and a shift of just 100 to 200 km in the track can be the difference between 40 cm of snow and a cold rain.

What is a nor'easter and where does it hit in Canada?

A nor'easter is a coastal low that intensifies as it moves up the eastern seaboard of North America, drawing its name from the strong northeasterly winds that blow ahead of it. In Canada it is chiefly a Maritime and Newfoundland phenomenon, battering Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland with heavy snow, ice, powerful onshore winds, and coastal storm surge. Because these storms ride the boundary between cold continental air and the relatively mild Atlantic, they can deliver anything from a metre of snow to freezing rain to lashing rain depending on the exact track and the temperature profile just offshore. The strongest nor'easters undergo "bombogenesis" — rapid deepening of at least 24 hectopascals in 24 hours — becoming a "weather bomb".

What about lake-effect snow and Arctic outbreaks?

Two other patterns round out the Canadian winter. Lake-effect snow forms when cold air sweeps across the relatively warm, unfrozen Great Lakes, picking up moisture and dumping it in narrow, intense bands downwind — southwestern Ontario's snowbelts around Barrie, London, and the Bruce Peninsula are notorious for this. It is not a travelling storm but a persistent local machine that can bury one town while leaving the next one over untouched. Why is the storm track so hard to forecast?

For all three storm types, the forecast lives and dies on the track. A Colorado low that runs 150 km further west turns a snowstorm into rain; a nor'easter that hugs the coast versus one that runs out to sea is the difference between a crippling blizzard and a windy afternoon. What time of year is each storm most common?

The three families peak at slightly different points in the season. Alberta clippers are most frequent in the heart of winter, from December through February, when the Arctic air source is deepest and the flow across the Rockies is fastest. Colorado lows favour the shoulder months of late autumn and early spring, when the temperature contrast between retreating cold air and returning Gulf warmth is sharpest — March in particular can deliver some of the Prairies' biggest snowfalls. Nor'easters plague Atlantic Canada from late autumn well into spring, with the fiercest often striking in January and February. None of this is a rulebook, but it explains why a March blizzard on the Prairies and a spring nor'easter in Nova Scotia are so characteristic of the Canadian calendar.
