Checking the forecast the moment you finish packing feels responsible, but the timing of your check matters as much as the check itself. Forecasts are living things — they refresh on a schedule, and travelling on stale data is how good trips go sideways.

The three-checkpoint routine

The most reliable approach is to check in layers, not once. Get the big picture 5 to 7 days out to decide whether the trip makes sense at all. Firm up the plan the evening before, when the afternoon model runs have landed and detail sharpens. Then take one last look on the morning of departure for warnings, the latest "feels like", rainfall and wind. Each check answers a different question, and skipping the last one is where people get caught by an overnight change.

When do the models actually update?

Forecasts change because the models behind them run on a clock, in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The European ECMWF, widely regarded as the world's leading medium-range model, runs its main high-resolution forecast twice a day, at 00 and 12 UTC, with results published several hours after each run. America's GFS runs four times a day (00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC), as does Germany's ICON. Because Australian Eastern Standard Time is UTC+10 (AEDT is +11), the 00 UTC run lands mid-morning here and becomes available through the afternoon; the 12 UTC run underpins the fresh evening picture. That is why an evening check often shows meaningfully different detail from a morning one.

Why the evening-before check matters most

If you only make one careful check, make it the evening before you travel. By then the models have ingested a full day of new observations and the latest runs have processed them, so the 24-hour outlook is about as sharp as it gets. It is late enough to catch a system that has sped up or slowed down, but early enough to change plans — swap a coastal walk for an inland one, leave an hour earlier to beat a front, or delay a day. A check three days out tells you the shape of the weather; the evening-before check tells you the hours.

What to look at for different trips

A road trip: prioritise rainfall totals, wind gusts and any severe-weather or flood warnings along the route, not just at the destination. Heavy rain and reduced visibility, crosswinds on exposed highways, and localised flooding are the practical hazards. In summer, check fire-weather warnings and total fire ban declarations for the regions you'll cross.

A flight: the weather at both airports and any fog, thunderstorms or strong crosswinds matter more than the temperature. Morning fog in the cooler months and afternoon storms in the warmer months are the classic disruptors.

The coast: check wind direction and strength, the marine forecast, and hazardous-surf or coastal-hazard warnings. A pleasant-looking day with a strong onshore wind is a miserable, and sometimes dangerous, beach day.

Check warnings right before you leave

Warnings move faster than routine forecasts. Severe thunderstorm, flood, fire-weather and cyclone warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology can be issued or updated at any hour as conditions evolve. A morning-of scan of the Bureau's warnings page for every region on your route is non-negotiable in the wet season and the fire season. Turn the checks into confidence

The reason a five-day forecast can flip is that the models genuinely disagree that far out and then converge as the event nears.
