Are WeatherWatch and MetVUW accurate?
WeatherWatch and MetVUW are the best-known independent forecasters in New Zealand. Both are genuinely useful but they work very differently, and neither replaces the official warning authority.

What is WeatherWatch and how does it forecast?
WeatherWatch.co.nz is a privately run New Zealand forecasting service. Its strength is communication: plain-language written forecasts, frequent updates during big weather events, and long-range pattern commentary that looks weeks ahead at whether the country is trending wet, dry, hot or cold. Rather than owning a national observation network, it interprets global model data and packages it into an accessible daily read.
That editorial voice is the appeal. Where an official forecast is deliberately measured, WeatherWatch will tell you plainly when it thinks a system is being over-hyped or under-called. What is MetVUW and why do trampers swear by it?
MetVUW (metvuw.com) grew out of Victoria University of Wellington and publishes forecast charts derived from the American GFS model rain-accumulation maps and mean-sea-level-pressure charts covering New Zealand, the Tasman Sea and the wider South Pacific. Crucially, it shows you the model output almost raw, chart by chart, out to several days ahead.
That is exactly why the backcountry community loves it. A tramper heading into the Southern Alps does not want a single town icon; they want to see the fronts, the pressure gradient and the rain bands marching across the map so they can judge for themselves when a system arrives and how heavy it looks. How accurate are they compared with MetService?
For general daily accuracy in the short range, all three are broadly in the same ballpark because they draw on the same underlying global models. The differences are about method and presentation, not a secret better forecast.

The key honest point: MetVUW relies on one model (GFS). GFS is a capable global model, but on any given day the European ECMWF model may handle a Tasman low or an approaching front better and sometimes worse. Trusting a single model means inheriting that model's bad days without warning.
Where do independent forecasters get it wrong?
Two recurring pitfalls. First, long-range certainty. WeatherWatch's multi-week outlooks are genuinely interesting, but forecasting beyond about ten days is closer to climatology and pattern-spotting than to a reliable daily forecast. Read them as "the pattern favours" rather than "it will".
