Is BBC Weather accurate?

The UK's most-used weather service, on the BBC website and app.

Quick answer

BBC Weather does not run its own forecast — it blends public models like the Met Office. In our last-30-day test that model scored 88/100 (about ±NaN°C off), but the app never shows you when the models disagree.

How BBC Weather makes its forecast. BBC Weather currently uses a proprietary blend from DTN (formerly MeteoGroup), but is in the process of moving back to the UK Met Office model it used for decades. That matters, because it means the accuracy you get from BBC Weather is really the accuracy of the models underneath it — the same models we test, in the open, against the recorded weather.

Our verdict. Once it completes the switch, BBC Weather will be showing the Met Office model — which scores strongly in our UK test. Today its blend is closed, so the Met Office scoreboard above is the best available guide to its accuracy.

The CheckWeather Score blends temperature, wind and rain accuracy — each measured against ERA5 (the recorded weather) over the last 30 days across 300 cities. Lower error means a higher score. The apps you know (AccuWeather, Apple Weather, The Weather Channel) are built on these models.

Common questions

Is BBC Weather accurate?
Once it completes the switch, BBC Weather will be showing the Met Office model — which scores strongly in our UK test. Today its blend is closed, so the Met Office scoreboard above is the best available guide to its accuracy.
What forecast model does BBC Weather use?
BBC Weather currently uses a proprietary blend from DTN (formerly MeteoGroup), but is in the process of moving back to the UK Met Office model it used for decades.
Which is more accurate — BBC Weather or the raw models?
BBC Weather is built on the raw models, so it can only be as good as they are on a given day. The advantage of comparing the models directly, the way we do, is that you also see the disagreement between them — the single best signal of how much to trust today's forecast, and something BBC Weather does not show.
