What is real and what is estimated

  • The sun's position is computed for this exact spot and time. Lighting follows it; cloud cover greys it down.
  • Rain and wind on the map follow Open-Meteo's forecast for the city centre grid point, about 1 to 2 km across. They are not street-level.
  • The radar is RainViewer's public composite at coarse resolution (about 600 m per pixel over the city). It shows the present only.
  • Building heights come from OpenStreetMap. Where a building has no recorded height, the map shows a guess.
  • "Do the models agree" compares five global and regional models for the same hour. Agreement is not accuracy; the trust card shows which model has actually been right in London.
  • Air quality and pollen come from Copernicus (CAMS) via Open-Meteo, at about 10 km resolution. Pollen is available in Europe only. The station dots are real hourly measurements from the London Air network (Imperial College).
  • Sun and shade shifts each building's footprint away from the sun by its height, so it shows which side of a street is in sun. It is an approximation, not a ray-traced shadow.
  • Rain by district uses eleven separate forecast points across Greater London; showers can differ between them by the hour.
  • Verdicts are rules of thumb from public guidance (Met Office, WHO UV index, CAA drone limits, RHS), not personal advice.

  • Sound, Motion and Lens are optional senses: wind, rain and thunder are synthesised from the forecast numbers (no recordings), the view sways with the gusts, and raindrops land on the lens when it rains. Off by default; Motion never runs under reduced-motion settings.
  • From zoom 14 every building near the camera is drawn by the 3D engine and lit by the sun with a real shadow map, so streets and parks fall into the shade of the buildings around them. Further out the map's own extrusions take over.
  • Clouds overhead are soft sprites at 900 to 1,400 m that drift with the wind; the aircraft follow the Heathrow approach path over the city at published heights, one every 100 seconds by day. Both are illustrative.
  • Water is a reflective surface that mirrors a sky built from the forecast (sun position, cloud cover, night); ripples follow the wind and rain roughens it. Buildings over 45 m are drawn as glass that reflects the same sky. Both are illustrative, not photographs.
  • Landmarks are simplified models built from published dimensions (London Eye 135 m, Elizabeth Tower 96 m, Tower Bridge towers 65 m, The Shard 310 m), not survey data.
  • Trains run on the mapped railway lines (four cars, illustrative timetable). Street life is illustrative and drawn at toy scale (about 1.6x real size so it reads from above): cars, buses and people move along the real streets in numbers that follow the hour (rush hours 07-09 and 16-19), the weekday, and the weather (rain and cold empty the pavements). No open live-position feed for road traffic is used, so nothing here is a tracked vehicle.
  • Venues on the Activities tab (golf courses, tennis courts, lidos, pitches, parks, playgrounds, dog parks, viewpoints, markets, pubs with gardens): 4,910 places from OpenStreetMap; the colour is the situation's verdict for the hour, the same for all of them because the forecast is one grid point.
