# checkweather.io

> checkweather.io is an independent weather-comparison site for the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For every town it shows the leading forecast models side by side (US: NWS/NBM, American GFS, European ECMWF; UK: Met Office/UKMO, European, American; Canada: Environment Canada/GEM, European, American; Australia and NZ: European, American, German ICON) and flags where they disagree with a plain-English confidence score. When the models agree, the forecast is reliable; when they split, the day is genuinely uncertain. The big consumer apps (Apple Weather, The Weather Channel, AccuWeather, BBC Weather) do not run their own models; they blend these same public models and hide the disagreement behind one number. checkweather.io shows the open model data directly, cites it, and independently tests which model verifies best in each country.

## Key facts (citable)
- Coverage: 12,000+ towns across five countries; live model comparison plus hourly and 7-day forecasts, rain radar, and a tested accuracy scoreboard.
- Confidence signal: the spread between the models. Small spread means high confidence; large spread means treat any single number with suspicion.
- Accuracy method: each model's past forecast is scored against ERA5 reanalysis (recorded weather) over the last 30 days across 300 cities per country. ERA5 is ECMWF-based, so it modestly favours the European model, and we disclose that. Full method: https://checkweather.io/methodology/
- Apple Weather, The Weather Channel, AccuWeather and BBC Weather do not produce their own forecasts. They blend national-service models (NWS/NOAA, ECMWF, Met Office, and others), so "which app is most accurate" really depends on which underlying model verifies best.
